Community Feedings

This program involves provision of meals to low income or homeless individuals and families. There are several ways this intervention is carried out:

St. Thomas USVI

1. The last Sunday of each month a hot meal is prepared and distributed to homeless individuals in St. Thomas from 1 pm to 5 pm at a predefined location. In the past this has been accomplished in front of a local shelter.

2. Food bags containing juice, crackers, peanuts, chips, granola bar and similar snacks are given out to homeless individuals who are found on park benches in the street etc. This is done in lieu of giving them money. Community volunteers are solicited to conduct this program a minimum three times a year.

These feedings are a part of the Homelessness Awareness program (see below for more information about this program).

Focus group: Homeless families, youth and adults.

Sierra Leone, West Africa

1. As an incentive for attending HIV/AIDS outreach and Women Empowerment sessions, participants are given a meal.

2. Workers who are involved in the day to day building of GHI clinic are fed one meal a day.

Focus group: program participants and construction workers

Approximately 20 hours are devoted to this program per year. The 20 hours includes organization preparation and execution of the program.
