The kick-off for this outreach was on site at the construction site of God's House International (GHI)
Clinic in Upper Marjay Town. On February 5, 2008 several male youth* were given an HIV/AIDS
awareness presentation and condom demonstration. This ad-hoc event also included an introduction
to the female condom. Only one out of the 8 youth acknowledged hearing about the female condom.
None had ever used it.
During this presentation, and all presentations held while in Sierra Leone, Yvonne Washington-Turay,
gave information about HIV/AIDS, how it is transmitted and how to prevent transmission of the
disease. In Sierra Leone an estimated 2.5-5% of the 5 million person population has transmitted HIV.
That is, 125,000-250,000 people infected with the virus. Participants asked and answered questions
in order to ensure that the messages presented were clear and understood.
In order to fully communicate with the participants in the outreaches, it is best that one speak Krio.
Krio is an English form of the French Creole. Because Yvonne Washington-Turay has been
administering medical care and HIV/AIDS outreaches since 2000, she can speak Krio well enough
for participants to understand and respect her. With this, it is not just that Mrs. Turay speaks the
language of the people, it is also that her intentions and relationship with the community is pure and
progressive.
In this outreach session Mr. Turay, the husband of Mrs. Turay, assisted with communicating the
message and L.E.G.A.C.Y. sang to the group the song "Love Yourself" from her album.
