Ellis Preparatory school is a small community school founded by Mr. Abu Bakar Sesay. Mr. Sesay
stated that he noticed many young children living in the streets of Sierra Leone and decided he would
use his expertise to start a school for them. In his efforts, he gathered together a few sponsors and
teachers who volunteer their services for half the salary they would normally receive.
As a result, children who would otherwise not get an education or have a home, now have an
opportunity to attend school and have guardians who care for them. Yvonne Washington-Turay’s visit
to the school was brief, but well spent. The younger children recited the days of the week and the
months of the year and the older children verbalized their expertise on current issues in the news and
historical issues within Sierra Leone. Several children were awarded for their efforts with prizes of
school supplies and sweets . The school was presented with a gift of school supplies and the
promise of seeking sponsors here in the United States to help with the construction of this wonderful
institution.
